Do You Have a Rodent Infestation?
For homeowners in the greater Pittsburgh area, rodents are not an uncommon sight. You may also have other critters that can become an annoyance such as gophers, groundhogs, possums, raccoons, and squirrels. Regardless, an infestation of any kind could prove to be destructive to your home and other personal belongings. Furthermore, no two species are ever alike where their feeding and nesting behaviors are concerned. One way or the other the professionals at Spectrum Pest Control are here to help.
Granted, you can use a wide range of attractants, in different traps, in order to lure mice and rats when practicing in-home rodent control, in Pittsburgh, and the surrounding communities. Just keep in mind that mice, and especially rats, are extremely suspicious when they encounter any new and unfamiliar object in the foraging paths that they have established. You can always buy the more common glue and snap traps, but those are only so effective based on where they are placed. This takes a thorough understanding of rodent biology which the technicians employed by Spectrum Pest Control have been rigorously trained in.
Another concern is the toxicity of the over-the-counter baits that are currently available. If not used properly, they can be potentially harmful to young children and pets. Most importantly, every species of rodent can multiply very quickly in a short period of time, and it can be very difficult to eradicate any infestations. For the Pittsburgh area, your option, should this happens, is to contact Spectrum Pest Control. Allow us to customize a Pittsburgh rodent control program; one that is tailored to your specific circumstances, and enables you to regain control of your home.
Warning Signs of a Rodent Infestation
We have seen the most pristine homes suffering with mice, rat, and other rodent infestations. So no matter how neat and clean you keep your home, you are not immune to this dilemma. During fall and winter, as the temperatures continue dropping, the need for mice control in Pittsburgh, along with other rodent control, becomes necessary. The colder the weather gets, the more they look for protected areas that afford them a warm shelter. Unfortunately, there is no place that is cozier and warmer than your home.
Interestingly enough, it is oftentimes difficult to determine if you have an infestation, or if a single stray just happened to find your home and wandered in. If you suspect that you have a rodent problem, your best course of action is to contact Spectrum Pest Control immediately. In the meantime, here are several warning signs indicating the presence of a rodent infestation:
Droppings – This is the most obvious indication of the presence of rodents. Along with their urine (see below), these are the most visible indicators, and the main reason to consider having a Pittsburgh mice control, or rodent control company, come out to your home. Droppings are typically found in cabinets, flooring nooks and crannies, and pantries. So those are the first places to look if you suspect there is rodent activity in your home.
Nests – The most common materials that rodents use to build their nests out of are fuzzy, soft, or warm. This could include dry grass, fabric, furniture batting and stuffing, shredded paper, and small twigs. Nests will normally be found near food and water in protected, quiet areas; where they will be safe from predators. Ideal places include areas among empty boxes, behind or inside appliances and machinery, in cabinets, and inside double walls.
Rubbing marks – Rodents, especially rats, usually have greasy fur coats and leave a greasy trail along the floor or sides of their established runways. If you can smear these rub marks with a dry cloth, they are very fresh, and this means that the rodent has been along that path recently. Once they quit using a particular path, dust will dry the grease and it will eventually flake off.
Sights and sounds – There is a lot of truth to the statement “If you’ve seen one mouse, you can bet there are more.” Suspicions of a rodent infestation oftentimes stem from the fact that someone in the household has actually seen one. Additionally, if you hear sounds that go “bump” in the night, such as clawing, gnawing, or scratching in cabinets, rafters, or walls; you probably have an infestation.
Urine – This is another very obvious and visible indicator of a rodent’s presence within your home. You can check for dried urine in those areas that you think they may be frequenting, or traveling through, by using a black or fluorescent light. Just keep in mind that bleach and certain cleaners will also fluoresce the same way as rodent urine.
