Thanksgiving has morphed into one of the country’s biggest holidays, thanks in part to the rise of Black Friday. Regardless of how you feel about shopping, I think we can all agree that turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes are enjoyable. But few things will ruin that enjoyment faster than a pest control problem in Pittsburgh. Want to avoid such issues this Thanksgiving? Then follow these tips:

  • Don’t leave those leftovers out! Many folks like to leave the Thanksgiving leftovers out on the counter or table for a while, so guests can pick at the food throughout the evening. We strongly advise against it. Leftovers are an attractive target for many pests, including ants, cockroaches and rodents.
  • Wash your dishes before you leave the house to go shopping. Even if you’re not heading out to fight the crowds, the sink should be empty at the end of the night. Pests aren’t picky, and they’ll feast on the food particles on those dirty dishes. If you don’t have the energy to clean them, at least put them in the dishwasher.
  • Make sure the doors and windows are sealed properly! Pests will use any opening to infiltrate your home, and weak door or window seals make for great entry points. If you have any poor seals, head to the home improvement store and pick up some weather stripping. It will block pests from entering underneath doors, and save you some money on energy costs.
  • Keep your purse close at the mall! If you do decide to go shopping, don’t set your purse down anywhere – high traffic areas are a common place to pick up bed bugs, and they can hop onto your purse if you set it down on the ground or a seating area.
