We can all agree that it’s much chillier now than it was a few weeks ago. Now that the cold weather has arrived, many pests will go dormant or become less active. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t take pest control measures in Pittsburgh, PA even now. Here are three pest control methods to consider during this frigid time:
- Drain the water from your yard – all of it! Whether it’s in the form of a pool, bird bath or decorative fountain, it’s time to let go of the water works for the year. Not only is it too cold for water to be exposed like that (making it liable to freeze), it also makes an inviting spot for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, and the embryos stay dormant until the weather warms up. If you’d like to avoid a mosquito problem in the spring, get rid of that water in the winter.
- Don’t leave firewood or any other type of lumber exposed! Keeping dead wood, lumber, firewood or old tree stumps in your yard will attract termites. And if termites set up a nest in your yard, it’s only a matter of time until they come to your house. Avoid that problem altogether by disposing of old wood and storing firewood in the garage instead.
- Shore up that weather stripping! Weather stripping is meant to create tighter seals around your doors and windows, which is great for conserving energy and keeping the house warm in the winter. However, it has the added benefit of keeping pests from squeezing in under doors. Basically, it’s a win-win situation.
