Wasps are parasitic pests that can either live in colonies or solitary. They have little impact on crops so are not deemed as an agricultural pest, but they do assist farmers at times. Since wasps will eat other insects, they have been found helpful to keep agricultural pest problems down in some areas. If you have an infestation, you might need a wasp exterminator in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Wasps will either live in colonies or in solitary communities.
Solitary wasps will live by themselves and will not create nests to live in. They will normally burrow them a tunnel for living quarters. All solitary wasps are fertile and can reproduce with other solitary wasps. Some solitary wasps’ species can reproduce on their own without a mate.
Colony wasps will build a vast nest to live in. Not all colony wasps’ are fertile. Normally the only fertile female is the queen, while all the males are fertile. The queen will breed with several males at one time to ensure a larger colony. Once a queen lays new eggs, older wasps will start to die off to make way for the younger wasps. Male wasps will travel great distances to find a mate to reproduce with, while fertile females will stay close to the nest.

Life Cycle

The both the social and solitary wasp has three life cycles. But with a few differences.
The social wasps’ queen will breed before she hibernates for the winter. The male sperm is kept inside of the female until spring comes when it will fertilize the eggs she is carrying inside her. The young queen will fly off to make a new colony for her eggs. The queen will have several sets of offspring until enough sterile female workers exist to maintain the colony. The queen will then start having fertile female and male wasps to help reproduce and grow the colony. The original queen will die off shortly after the young fertile females become adults.
The solitary wasp will lay an egg in a cell then close it up. There is no more contact between the adult wasps with the egg. When the egg hatches it will feed on the food left for it and emerge into an adult wasp.

Getting Rid of Wasps

Since wasps are a dangerous insect. You will want to get rid of them as soon as you notice them. Be very cautious, wasps can sting several times at once to protect itself. You may want to consider finding a wasp exterminator in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who is trained to deal with wasps. They can safely remove them and their nests from the area without you getting hurt.
If you have to do it by yourself, make sure to wear protective clothes so you do not get stung by the wasps. Spray the nest to saturation with wasp insecticide. Once all the wasps are gone from the nest, use a pole to remove the nest from where it is attached. You will want to pick the nest up with a shovel and completely remove it from around your house. If you leave the nest on the ground, you may risk other wasps coming back to it and starting over again.
